Northern Community Bank has been featured in a new case study by Co-operatives UK, highlighting how the credit union has strengthened its co-operative governance to support innovation and better serve its account holders.
Founded in 1982 as Nelson Community Credit Union with just 15 local savers contributing a combined £75, Northern Community Bank now serves more than 17,500 account holders across Lancashire, Preston, Lancaster and Cumbria, with more than £20 million in savings.
As a co-operative, everyone who opens an account becomes a part owner, with profits reinvested into better services or returned to account holders rather than paid to external shareholders. In March 2026, Northern Community Bank shared £1.1 million of profits with account holders through dividends and loan interest rebates.
In recent years, the organisation has undergone significant change, including a rebrand to reflect the wider communities it now serves and the opening of a new £2.5 million headquarters featuring a purpose-built training suite for other credit unions and community organisations.
The case study also explores how Northern Community Bank has transformed the way it communicates with account holders, using clearer and simpler language while continuing to highlight the benefits of credit union membership.
Alongside these developments, the organisation has focused on strengthening its governance. Chief Compliance Officer Magdalena Niemczyk worked to develop a more robust governance framework before turning to Co-operatives UK for specialist support, including a Governance Audit and bespoke co-operative director training.
The Governance Audit reviewed the organisation’s processes and procedures, with recommendations covering areas including succession planning, board skills and governance processes. Co-operatives UK also provided practical tools and resources to support the implementation of those recommendations.
With further training and implementation planned, Northern Community Bank has already seen improvements in how its board communicates, conducts meetings and records decisions, alongside a greater sense of ownership of governance across the organisation.
The case study highlights how strong governance has provided the foundation for Northern Community Bank to continue evolving and innovating while remaining focused on delivering the best possible outcomes for its account holders.
