Credit unions across Great Britain continue to demonstrate their strength and resilience, with the latest Bank of England figures highlighting continued growth in membership, assets and financial performance.
Across Great Britain, credit union membership has continued to increase, reflecting the enduring appeal of a financial model built around members and communities. There was an increase in membership between 2024 and 2025, taking total membership to 1.53 million, including adult members and juvenile depositors – the highest level on record for Great Britain. Membership has increased from 1.37 million in 2021 to 1.53 million in 2025, representing growth of 11.5% over the period. The continued rise demonstrates that more people are recognising the value of credit unions as a trusted alternative for saving and accessing affordable, responsible credit.
Lending to members also continued to grow, with credit unions across Great Britain increasing their lending by 2.5% between 2024 and 2025, from £1.82 billion to £1.87 billion. The £45.4 million increase takes lending to its highest level on record, highlighting continued strong demand for affordable, responsible credit.
The longer-term picture is even more significant, with loans to members increasing by 74.9% since 2021 across Great Britain. The sustained growth demonstrates the important role credit unions are playing in providing accessible lending to households, while ensuring members benefit from a financial model built around their needs.
For All Together Money and credit unions across England, Scotland and Wales, the latest figures provide a positive foundation to build on – strengthening the case for greater awareness, ambition and investment in the movement as it continues to grow.
