Commsave Credit Union is celebrating 35 years of growth after expanding from a workplace credit union serving Northamptonshire postal workers into a nationwide member-owned financial co-operative supporting more than 43,000 members across the country.
Founded in 1991 as Northamptonshire Postal Workers Credit Union, Commsave has expanded through successive membership and common bond extensions, mergers and payroll partnerships. Milestones include exceeding 10,000 members in 2013, assets passing £100 million in 2021 and membership growing beyond 43,000 in 2026.
In the year to 30 September 2025, member savings increased by 6.6% to £94.8 million, while the loan book grew by 1.5%. Reserves reached £16.7 million, significantly above the £11 million regulatory minimum. Members received a 4% dividend, with £3.1 million returned to savers alongside £364,000 in loan interest rebates.
Today, Commsave, headquartered in Northamptonshire, reaches members nationwide through workplace payroll partnerships and a membership base that extends far beyond its postal worker origins.
Matt Goulding, Chief Executive of Commsave Credit Union, said: “Reaching 35 years is a huge milestone for any organisation, but what makes it particularly special is how much has stayed the same alongside everything that has changed. We are still member-owned, still focused on people over profit, and still driven by that founding idea that everyone deserves access to fair, affordable finance.
“As demand for ethical and affordable financial services continues to grow, we believe credit unions have an increasingly important role to play. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved over the past 35 years, but we’re even more excited about helping more people build stronger financial futures in the years ahead.”
Commsave’s growth mirrors the evolution of the UK credit union sector over the past three decades.
Following its expansion beyond postal workers, Commsave widened its common bond to include additional sectors and communities, while developing payroll partnerships across the UK. Key milestones included passing 10,000 members in 2013, establishing international partnerships in 2019 and exceeding £100 million in assets in 2021.
Growth accelerated following a merger with Harvest Money Credit Union and more recent developments have included a rebrand and relocation to permanent headquarters in Northampton in 2023, the introduction of Green Loans to support more sustainable purchases, and the expansion of payroll deduction services.
Alongside its financial services, Commsave continues to invest in community impact. Since launching its Community Fund in 2022, the credit union has distributed more than £150,000 to charities, schools and community organisations nominated by members.
This 35th birthday milestone was marked by the Commsave team at a gala dinner in Northampton, where more than 150 guests, including staff, directors, partner organisations, members and Ambassadors, came together to celebrate the organisation’s achievements and look ahead to its future.
