Cardiff & Vale Credit Union (CVCU) has reported a strong and positive year, marking significant progress across membership growth, savings, and lending while continuing to deepen its support for local communities.
The latest annual results highlight sustained growth in total membership, alongside increases in both member savings and loans issued—clear indicators of the credit union’s expanding reach and the trust it continues to build across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. This upward trajectory reflects not only financial resilience but also a growing demand for ethical, community-focused financial services.
At the organisation’s Annual General Meeting, Rhian Thomas, Chair of the Credit Union praised the collective efforts behind the year’s achievements, stating: “I am pleased to report that 2024–25 was a year of progress for CVCU – financially, operationally, and in terms of the support we provide to the communities across the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan area.
“I would like to begin by extending my heartfelt thanks to every member of our staff, our managers, and our Board of Directors for their hard work, commitment and diligence throughout the year. The achievements we acknowledge tonight are a direct reflection of their collective effort and dedication.”
The AGM also welcomed Jane Hutt, Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Chief Whip and Trefnydd at Welsh Government, whose continued support for the sector underscores the vital role credit unions play in promoting financial inclusion across Wales. Speaking following the event, Jane said: “I have long been a supporter of the Credit Union and the work that they do, and I was glad that they held their AGM at the Bridge Between Community Centre in Barry.
“I would like to remind anyone looking to borrow money that Credit Unions are an affordable, safe and ethical lender.
“Everyone should be able to access fair financial services and Credit Unions provide ethical and affordable alternatives to high-cost credit that can trap people in a cycle of debt. Thank you to everyone involved at the Credit Union for your incredible efforts in supporting your members.”
The year’s performance reinforces Cardiff & Vale Credit Union’s role as a cornerstone of the local financial ecosystem – helping individuals save regularly, access affordable credit, and avoid high-cost lenders.
Looking ahead, the organisation remains focused on building on this momentum—expanding its membership base further, increasing accessibility to its services, and continuing to deliver meaningful financial support to communities across the region.
