UK Savings Week runs from 21–27 September 2026, with this year’s campaign encouraging people to “Save your way today. Thank yourself tomorrow.”
Led by the Building Societies Association (BSA), UK Savings Week encourages people to think about their savings – whether they are building a financial safety net, working towards a particular goal or simply finding ways to put a little money aside regularly. The campaign recognises that there is no single way to save, with people having different circumstances, goals and capacity to put money aside.
For All Together Money, that message is closely aligned with the role credit unions play in communities across Great Britain.
The latest Bank of England Credit Union Statistics, published in July 2026 and covering the year ending 2025, show that 1.532 million people were members of credit unions across Great Britain, an increase of 11.5% since 2021.
Behind these figures are individual saving journeys – people putting money aside for unexpected costs, family occasions, future plans and greater financial security.
Matt Bland, Chief Executive of All Together Money, said: “Saving is the key to financial resilience, whether that means putting aside a small amount each payday, building an emergency fund or working towards a longer-term goal. But we recognise that saving is not equally easy for everyone.
“That’s why we’re pleased to support UK Savings Week and its message that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to saving. Credit unions have a long-standing role in helping people develop regular saving habits, while giving members access to a financial organisation that exists for their benefit.
“The latest Bank of England figures show that more than 1.5 million people across Great Britain are already members of credit unions. Behind that figure are millions of individual saving journeys, each with their own goals and circumstances.
“UK Savings Week provides a valuable opportunity to celebrate those journeys, highlight the work credit unions are doing in communities across Great Britain, and encourage more people to consider what saving could look like for them. Small savings can make a big difference.”
The stories behind those statistics demonstrate the different ways credit unions are helping people save.
In the South West, Westcountry Savings & Loans recently celebrated reaching its 4,000-member milestone, marking another step in its growth and its work supporting communities across the region. Further north, Northern Community Bank has seen savings grow from £13 million to £21 million since 2021, while the number of account holders has increased from 12,000 to more than 17,500.
At Commsave Credit Union, member savings have increased by 6.6% to £94.8 million, with the credit union now supporting more than 43,000 members. Members also received a 4% dividend, with £3.1 million returned to savers.
Together, these examples demonstrate how thousands of individual saving decisions can build into substantial pools of member-owned savings, while helping credit unions grow their reach within the communities they serve.
Saving can also be made more engaging. PrizeSaver, a savings scheme offered through participating credit unions, encourages regular saving by giving members the opportunity to enter a monthly prize draw while keeping the money they have saved in their account.
Every £1 in an eligible PrizeSaver account at the end of the month gives members one automatic entry into the following month’s draw, up to a maximum of 200 entries. There are currently 21 participating credit unions and more than 25,000 members, with more than £550,000 in prizes awarded and £5,700 in prizes available every month.
The scheme is designed to encourage regular saving, add excitement to the experience of saving and support financial resilience. As Emma Norledge, President of All Together Money, explains: “PrizeSaver appeals to both members and Employer Partners. It gives CUs the chance to offer a different savings product with a great incentive to save.”
The benefits of credit union membership can also extend beyond the savings balance itself. A recent example from Cash Box Credit Union, highlighted that its borrowers had saved an estimated £10.8 million in interest compared with other forms of borrowing. The credit union also reported that 617 members collectively saved £352,700 for Christmas 2025, demonstrating how affordable credit and regular saving can work alongside one another to help members manage their finances.
This relationship between saving and borrowing is also reflected in the latest Social Impact Report from London Mutual Credit Union. Its “save as you repay” model means borrowers build a financial buffer alongside their repayments, with 96.8% of current borrowers holding a savings balance today.
The report also shows how saving can strengthen over time. Members who have borrowed more than £15,000 from London Mutual over their lifetime are 94% likely to be saving with the credit union, compared with 69% of members who have never borrowed. Their average savings balance is also nearly three times higher.
London Mutual’s wider lending figures demonstrate the potential financial impact of combining affordable borrowing with saving. During the year, it lent £16.7 million to 5,104 members, with the credit union estimating that this saved members £2.15 million in interest compared with the most realistic alternatives available to each borrower – around £41,000 every week.
The work taking place across the movement is also being recognised more widely. At the 2026 Consumer Credit Awards, Enterprise Credit Union was recognised as Best Credit Union Savings Provider, while Beacon Savings & Loans was named Social Enterprise of the Year 2026, recognising its work supporting financial inclusion and its community.
These are just some of the stories demonstrating the breadth of work taking place across credit unions – from helping someone make their first regular saving to supporting established savers, encouraging saving through innovative products and helping people build savings alongside affordable borrowing.
