In August, Watford Credit Union officially became South Herts Credit Union Ltd, marking an exciting new chapter in its mission to support local communities. The rebrand comes alongside an expansion of its membership, now open to anyone who lives or works across Hertfordshire, including Hertsmere residents in EN postcodes.

“This change means even more people can enjoy the benefits of being a member of an ethical savings and loans co-operative,” said Stephen Harvey, Chair of South Herts Credit Union. “Our aim has always been to serve the community, and by expanding our common bond, we can now reach more residents and workers across the county while continuing to support existing payroll deduction schemes for staff at Watford Community Housing and Watford Borough Council.”

The credit union began in 2000 when a group of community-minded individuals came together to create a financial co-operative for Watford. At that time, legislation required members to share a “common bond,” which was originally defined as the Borough of Watford. Over the years, the credit union has grown steadily and now serves over 1230 members.

“By widening our membership to the whole of Hertfordshire, we can continue to grow our impact and help more people access ethical financial services,” added Steve.
